Contributions:

i)   About 14 numbers of indigenous rice varieties were collected and.

ii)   The centre has been taking the initiatives for organic solid waste management through vermicomposting. The organic soild waste (kitchen waste) generated in the Girls’ and Boys’ Hostel have been collected and mixed with cow dung and rice straw for vermicomposting. The Eisenia foetida earthworm species has been using for the same. At present the Centre has the capacity to produce about  30 kg of vermicompost within 45 days. The centre is also intended to increase the production by recycling agricultural wastes in addition to the in-house organic waste. The prepared compost is stable,  fine granular organic manure, rich in nutrients, growth promoting substances, beneficial soil microbes and having properties of inhibiting pathogenic microbes, which enriches soil quality by improving its physicochemical and biological properties. The application of vermicompost was tested through student project work on Abelmoschus esculentus cultivation and satisfactory results were recorded. The demand of vermicompost in the vicinity of the University is very high. It is because of Tulaipanji cultivation and awareness against chemical fertilizers. Tulaipanji is an indigenous aromatic rice landrace grown mainly in Raiganj sub-division of North Dinajpur district of West Bengal, India. Aroma  and quality of this rice variety is strongly associated with its native origin and organicfarming.
