Therefore, The Department of Computer & Information Science is an Interdisciplinary Academic Department at the Raiganj University. The Department of CIS and its focus is many ways different with other traditional Computing related department in West Bengal. It has established to draw a common platform for information and technological solutions to create a knowledge society. When most of the Computing Schools dealing only software, and hardware related technologies in their curricula The Department of CIS has opened up a new eye for merging interaction and integration of Computing, Information Technologies for the Society and Service Sector.

As a Service Science, Computer & Information Science is relatively new and much popular in Western Countries. The endeavor for establishing such practice in India is really difficult in many senses but still to reach the agenda of Digital Society, Knowledge Society—The Department of Computer & Information Science is working for. The Department of CIS has its vision in the areas of E-Governance, E-Commerce, Disaster Management, GIS, Geo-Spatial Technologies, Nano-Technology, Intellectual Property Rights, AI and Expert Systems, Computer Science, Networking, Soft Computing, High Performance Computing, Social Computing, HCI, Cloud Computing, Green Informatics, Information Management and Other Emerging Technologies.

However Computer & Information Science is also synonymously called as Information Science & Technology as the broadest branch within computing and informatics and it deals with applications of IT, knowledge management tools for the other sectors and domains i.e. directly to the people or community. Simply IST denotes the interaction of information-technology-people and same can also be performed by the CIS. With the rapid development of information technology, researchers in all fields are eager to exchange new ideas connected with Computer and Information Science. It provides a valuable opportunity for researchers, scholars and some scientists to exchange their ideas face-to-face. In brief the slogan of the Department is—

Achievements in Recent Past at Dept. of CIS

• • ➤  The Department of CIS has successfully conducted International Seminar on Emerging Trends in Information Science and Technology (ISETIST), January, 2017

• • ➤  The Department completed a National Seminar on Recent Trends in Computer Applications, April, 2016

• • ➤  The Department has tied up with International Scientific Research Organization for Science Engineering and Technology (ISROSET) for conducting knowledge events and already conducted one knowledge event.

• • ➤  The Department of CIS has collaborated with International Journal of Information Science and Computing (IJISC), New Delhi for the publication of research work contributed by all types of stakeholders (students, faculty members and researchers)

• • ➤  The Department of CIS has organized National Seminar (NSETIST-2019), funded by Government of West Bengal, and Technical Sponsorship from IETE Kolkata.

• • ➤  The Department of CIS (PG & Research Section) has organized National Symposium on Foundation and Advances in Computing (NSFARAC-2019) in Collaboration with Indian Academic Researchers Association (IARA), Trichy, India. In this PG, MPhil & Ph.D. Students from more than 15 different departments was participated.

• • ➤  The Department of CIS (PG & Research Section) has organized first National Conference of Raiganj University called NACITMAC (National Conference on Emerging Trends of Information Technologies in Management & Commerce), held on June, 2019.

• • ➤  The Department of CIS (PG & Research Section) has acted as Associate regarding Organization of three (03) International Conference named ‘International Conference on Recent Trends on Computing and Communications (ICRICC), conducted by the RCET (An Engineering College, Under Anna University, Kanyakumari, TN, India) held in the 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively.

• • ➤  The Department of CIS has introduced BCA Program as Self Financed and Evening Program for the benefits of the students in the year 2018.

• • The Department of CIS has got first substantive post (Asst. Professor) in the year 2018 and as a result as per the norms and initiative of the university Ph.D. & M.Phil. program has been started.

• • ➤  The Department of CIS got its second officiating Head of the Department Prof (Dr.) K.S. Tiwary who also holds the position of Dean (Science and Management), Raiganj University.

• • ➤  The Department of CIS has introduced another subject ‘Computer Science’ with the B.Sc. (H)-Computer Science and M.Sc. in Computer Science from the year 2019.

• • ➤  Dr. P.K. Paul, Assistant Professor (who also holds the position of Executive Director, MSc CIS Program since the beginning of the MSc program and department nomenclature as CIS); joined as first Information Scientist of the university as an additional charge since 2019.

• • ➤  The Department also got more sustentative posts and as a result two more Assistant Professors have joined (Dr. J.L. Dey; dated 22-01-2020 and Dr. Arup Sarkar; dated 11-02-2020) in early 2020.

• ➤  Dr. Laxminarayan Sahoo joined (dated 18-02-2020) as first Associate Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science from February, 2020.

• • ➤  Our BCA Student Sushmita Bhattacharjee stood first in Dance Competition (13th Global Harmony, 2017) among the host deputed institute at Malda held at Pune, India

• • ➤  Our MSc CIS Students Bishnu Raman Misir had presented his paper in International Conference on Recent Developments on Science, Technology, Humanities and Management (ICRDSTHM-17) and Paper has been published in Proceedings. His paper is also IJCA, United States

• • ➤  Our MSc CIS Student Pranay Biswas had published his research trend report on Internet in UGC Approved journals.

• • ➤  Our MSc CIS Student Suchismita Das has presented her work at NSETIST-19 and also published her work in the Edited Research based Book.
