The Department of Economics in erstwhile Raiganj College (University College) was a premier department in the faculty of Arts. Since its inception in 1948 the major activities of the Department was to impart the qualitative education to the students of a backward area admitted to undergraduate levels and being involved in major socio economic program of this region. The department of Economics has offered qualitative education to all students and to achieve excellence in teaching and research and prepare the students to address the local and global issues and to deal with the socio economic problems of this region. After upgrading the erstwhile Raiganj College (University College) to the Raiganj University in 2015 the department has been offering Under Graduate Honours, Masters in Economics, M. Phil and Ph.D in Economics. The department has also emphasised to make our students to become good economist, policy makers and financial advisors for the academic as well as the corporate world. Every year we are getting lot of response in Masters and Ph.D from National and International level.

Mission of the Department:

●  The mission of the department is to provide, through both teaching and research, a better understanding of the local, national and global socio economic issues that will confront our society now and in the future.
●  The Department’s teaching mission is to offer undergraduate and post graduate degree program with emphasis on the relationship of the theory to practice.
●  The Department’s research mission is to develop an environment conducive to promoting high-quality applied research.
●  To prepare our students for successful careers as applied economists.
●  To prepare our UG students for PG in Economics, Law and business administration

●  The Department had successfully completed the survey program on old Age, Widow and Disability Pension in West Bengal under State Statistical system, a Government of India Scheme and 20 students participated in the survey programme of the district.
●  Dr. Subrata Saha, Associate Professor, Economics received Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Life Time Achievement National Award by IRDP in 2018
●  Mr. Anirban Choudhury, PG student received State Youth Science fair award in the year 2015 and 2017
