The Department of Commerce is one of the earliest departments of Raiganj University. The teaching of commerce is one of the most requested courses in the country today as it develops the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary among students for the successful management of commerce and industry. The department was born with the launch of B.com degree classes in 1948.From its origins, the Department has maintained a high academic profile that is clearly reflected in the outstanding academic performance of students.In acknowledgement of its noteworthy achievements,Raiganj College was upgraded to Raiganj University in the year 2015. A new feather was attached to the department of commerce with the introduction of M.Com course in the year 2016. In 2018 the department began a two-year M.Phil curriculum, and currently it follows the New M.Phil. Regulations laid down by the University Grants Commission and full-time PHD.

The course is dedicated to transforming students into responsible citizens of the country with high moral values, understanding the issues of human relationships and developing an ability to appreciate the finer values of life. The department provides students with the latest developments in the field of business and commerce and trains them to the practical application of the same in modern organizations. It is designed to enable them to meet the challenges of business growth and transformation through decisive thinking, intellectual attitudes and prime decision-making.

The courses were designed, updated and transmitted to develop conceptual and analytic skills among students in accordance with industry requirements. The course structure has a knowledgeable blend of theoretical and practical reasoning to meet industry requirements that provide a comprehensive overview of commerce with an overview of other areas of management. The Department has experienced faculty and has plans to invite experts from industry as well as academia from reputed institutions on need basis. The course is enriched to inculcate a research culture and to get an exposure to the working of corporate environment and overall development of the student.

Future Plans on Programs:

●  To execute the plan of opening an extensional counter of ICAI course for spreading commerce education in rural areas.

●  To open a study centre on CS programme as programme course for the betterment of UG &PG students of this University and surrounding area as proposed.

●  PG diploma in E-commerce

●  Diploma in tax certification course.

●  UGC approved remedial coaching centre for the backward classes of the society.

●  Recently our department has signed the MOU with ICSI for opening an extension counter in collaboration with the department of commerce, Raiganj University.
●  The Department of Commerce has also conformed to introduce new courses in collaborate with CIMA
