The Centre for Women’s Studies of Raiganj University has aided the efforts of this institution to reach out to the issues related to gender that plague this region. It intends to contribute towards the empowerment of women by addressing their region-specific needs. This endeavour on the part of Raiganj University ensures a platform for gender interventions in the area keeping in mind its socio-economic realities. It envisages to promote the UN Sustainable Development Goal of Promoting Equality and Empowerment of Women and to uplift the status of women, not only in Uttar Dinajpur but also in the adjoining districts. It is the only Centre of its kind in a radius of approximately 200 kilometres and is strategically of immense importance as the region has international borders in its proximity that calls for socio-cultural awareness for the under-privileged women who stand the threat of multiple bio-political violations of their constitutional rights.
The Centre’s mission is to build a curriculum with the goal of addressing the local and global issues related to the development of women, to conduct courses and workshops to inculcate skills in women thereby equipping them to be economically independent, to generate awareness about their rights to health, education, property and other socio-political issues and to instil leadership qualities in them. To attain this end the Centre works closely with local NGOs and the State Women’s Commission.
